Week Commencing 14th October 2109

One to Watch

Wed 16th Oct thru till Sat 19th Oct- Macbeth- Norwich Theatre Royal

Is there really anyone who has done more for British theatre than William Shakespeare? A man who has no social media presence, has never appeared on TV and has never had a PR agent and here we are 400 years since his death and his plays are still celebrated and performed around the world. Every cast and company will always bring something different to the play and this week in Norwich we are lucky enough to have The Watermill Theatre bringing us two Shakespeare classics. From Tuesday we have A Midsummer Nights Dream  and then on Wednesday Macbeth begins showing.

By all means check out both of them, but given this is a review of one piece I have chosen Macbeth to concentrate on Macbeth. For those who don’t know the story Macbeth is told by a group of witches he will one day become King. Due to his ambition he murders the current king, and takes the throne. From this he is taken over by paranoia and guilt and ragged into a world of madness. Believed to have been first performed in 1606 four hundred years later we find Shakespeare’s shortest tragedy.

In the Watermill Theatre’s production this week we find Shakespeare going rock n roll, were promised Johnny Cash, the Rolling Stones and The XX rubbing shoulders with this historic play. So all I can say is get out and see it whilst it’s in town. “Out damned spot! Out I say.”

Get it Booked

Mon 14th Oct- Wed 16th Oct- CAMP!- Stage 2, Norwich/ Seagull Theatre, Lowestoft/ St Georges Theatre Great Yarmouth

Ok I raved about this last week but that was just the workshops this time we have the full performance. There is absoloutley no excuse not to see this as it is touring the region starting in Norwich on Monday, moving onto Lowestoft Tues, Great Yarmouth on Wednesday before it takes up residence for the end of the week at Soho Theatre London. James McDermott is an amazing talent and as an avid theatre person there are so few plays we get to see before a London crowd but this we actually get to see first.

As it is a brand new piece I can only really give you the promotional speech but the story promises to tell the tale of a journalist heading to Chechnya to report on state sanction anti gay purges. We are promised cabaret, comedy, song and smut… can see where the title came from. I’ve been a fan of James’s since Rubbering and this looks like it’s definitely worth a school night out.

Worth a Mention

Fri 18th Oct- Sun 20th Oct- Wild Paths Festival- Norwich, Various Venues

This only is worth a mention because if you have not come across Wild Paths yet you clearly don’t live in Norwich or anyone near. Anyway if you thought festival season was over you were sorely mistaken, as Wild Paths brings alive the festival spirit for one weekend only, across every music venue the city has to offer. It offers a mix of established and emerging artists headlined by Jose Gonzalez. Would recommend anyone near the city to have look through the line up and give something new ago. If your strapped for cash then check out the free gigs also available so there is no reason this weekend can’t be festival weekend for us all.

Line up and Tickets available at https://www.wildpaths.co.uk/
